Polishing is how the industry has fixed tired paint for decades, and it still has its place. The question is never whether polishing works. It’s how much clearcoat the car has left to spend.
- Polishing improves a finish by removing a thin layer of clearcoat to level the surface.
- On paint with margin to spare, it’s the right tool.
- On thin factory clearcoat, every polish spends material that doesn’t come back.
What polishing does
Scratches, swirls and oxidation sit in the top of the clearcoat. Polishing levels them by removing the material around them until the surface is flat again. A full correction removes around 5 µm.
Representative figures. The actual change depends on the condition of the paint.
On a clearcoat of around 50 µm, that’s a meaningful share of what’s there, and it never comes back.
When it’s the right tool
Polishing remains a real craft. A show car is repainted with extra clearcoat precisely so there is margin to refine before every event. Polishing is the right tool when the finish was built to be polished, and light defects on healthy paint are exactly what it’s for.
When it costs you
Most cars weren’t built to be polished. They carry thin factory clearcoat with little to spare, and repeated correction compounds it: each pass costs more margin than the last, and produces less result.
Every polish removes material you can’t replace.
When it’s gone too far
Once too much has been removed, the clearcoat can no longer protect the paint properly. It can cloud, fade or peel. Polishing through to the colour coat leaves a dull patch that only paint can fix.
Know before you polish
Before any polish, it’s worth knowing how much clearcoat is there. A Paint Health Check answers that, and sometimes the honest answer is that a polish is all the car needs.
Polish some, rebuild some
Paint rarely wears evenly. One panel can have margin to spare while the next is running thin, often because it has been corrected more often.
So the answer isn’t always one or the other. It can be both: rebuild the panels that need it, and polish the rest.
When there isn’t enough left
FUSION restores that margin. A rebuilt finish can then be polished without cutting into the paint underneath.
Common questions
How much clearcoat does a polish remove?
A full correction removes around 5 µm. The exact amount depends on the paint and the process.
How often can a car be polished?
Only as often as its clearcoat allows. Each polish removes a little more, so the margin shrinks every time.
Can a car be polished after FUSION?
Yes. A rebuilt finish can be polished without cutting into the paint underneath.
