Every SkyGloss service starts the same way. Before anyone names a service or a price, we read the paint. Here’s what that involves, and why it comes first.
- We read the car before we recommend anything: its readings, its history and the condition of the finish.
- The readings guide the decision. They don’t make it on their own.
- The answer is one of four: build, cut, both, or leave it as it is.
Why we check first
Clearcoat is what protects the paint underneath it, and it doesn’t grow back once it’s thin. Two cars that look the same can have very different amounts left.
Recommending a service before knowing which of those cars you’re looking at would be guesswork. So the check comes first, every time.
What we look at
- Paint conditionScratches, oxidation, environmental damage, wash damage, etching and fading.
- Correction historyWhether the car has been polished or corrected before, and how often.
- Paint and working roomPaint-depth readings across the car, read with its full picture.
- Defect severityHow aggressive conventional correction would need to be.
- The work involvedA light polish, several hours of correction, or multiple stages.
- The result you wantImprovement, full restoration, resale preparation or long-term preservation.
The readings
We use a paint-depth gauge, which measures the total paint on a panel in microns (µm): clearcoat, colour coat and primer together. Factory paint on most cars reads somewhere between about 75 and 200 µm in total, depending on the manufacturer and the model.
Example from SkyGloss training material. Readings vary from panel to panel, and are read together with the car’s history and condition.
What matters most is how the panels compare. A big difference between neighbouring panels, or a low reading on a panel that has been polished before, is where we look closer.
What a reading can and can’t tell us
A paint-depth gauge doesn’t measure the clearcoat on its own. Read across the whole car, it shows differences between panels, previous repairs, and how much room the finish is likely to have.
The decision comes from the reading and the full Paint Health Check, not from the gauge alone.
Then we decide
- Build. Rebuild the clearcoat.
- Cut. Correct by removing material.
- Both. Rebuild some areas, correct others.
Sometimes the right answer is to leave the finish as it is. Either way, you leave knowing what condition your paint is in.
What you leave with
- Your readings. Explained panel by panel, in plain terms.
- The condition. What the readings and the finish say about the paint.
- A recommendation. If the car needs one. Sometimes it doesn’t.
What it costs
The Paint Health Check is available at SkyGloss Pakistan. What you do with the result is up to you.
Common questions
How long does a Paint Health Check take?
Around fifteen minutes.
Do I have to book a service afterwards?
No. The check tells you what condition your paint is in and what it needs. The decision is yours.
Does the check mark the paint?
No. The readings are taken with a gauge that rests on the surface without marking it.
SkyGloss Pakistan is the official distributor of SkyGloss in Pakistan, based in Islamabad. Every service we offer starts with a Paint Health Check.
