Coatings, film or FUSION: what sits on top, and what’s built in.

Coatings and film protect the clearcoat. FUSION rebuilds it. They work at different levels, and they work together.

Ceramic coatings, paint protection film and FUSION often get compared as if they do the same job. They don’t. Two of them protect the clearcoat. One rebuilds it.

Key points
  • A coating is a thin layer on top of the clearcoat, typically a micron or two thick.
  • Film is a thick urethane sheet fitted over the paint, usually around 150 to 200 µm.
  • FUSION adds clearcoat back into the finish itself, and the layers on top work best on a healthy base.

Two different jobs

Your clearcoat is the paint’s own protection. A coating protects the clearcoat. Both matter, and they work at different levels.

Simplified. Not to scale.

Coatings

A ceramic coating is a thin layer, typically a micron or two thick, that bonds to the top of the clearcoat. Coatings improve slickness, cleanability and water behaviour, and they do it best on a healthy base.

A coating can only protect what’s there. That’s structural, not a criticism. RESIN FILM is SkyGloss’s own performance layer: dual-layer, with self-healing at the surface, applied over a sound foundation.

Film

Paint protection film is a clear urethane sheet, usually around 150 to 200 µm thick, fitted over the paint to take physical hits such as stone chips. Because it’s fitted in sheets, it has edges and seams.

SHIELD is SkyGloss’s sprayed alternative: a finish, not a film, with a peelable membrane underneath.

FUSION

FUSION works at the level underneath. It adds clearcoat back into the existing finish, typically +7 to +15 µm. It isn’t a coating sitting on top; the rebuilt material becomes part of the paint.

A coating assumes something healthy is already underneath it. FUSION is what makes that true.

How they fit together

On most cars, the foundation comes first: FUSION to rebuild the clearcoat, then RESIN FILM, a coating or film on top if you want one. A coating or film over thin, tired clearcoat protects what’s left, but it can’t add any back.

A Paint Health Check decides where your car starts.

Common questions

Can I still get a ceramic coating after FUSION?

Yes. A coating works best on a healthy base, and FUSION is what gives it one.

Is FUSION a coating?

No. A coating sits on top of the clearcoat. FUSION adds clearcoat back into the finish, and the rebuilt material becomes part of the paint.

Which one does my car need?

That depends on the condition of the paint. A Paint Health Check comes first, and the readings decide.
