Ask most people what protects their car’s paint and they’ll name a wax, a coating or a film. The real answer is already on the car. It’s the clearcoat, and it was put there at the factory.
- Clearcoat is the clear top layer of factory paint, and it does most of the protecting.
- On most modern cars it’s only around 50 microns thick: thinner than a sticky note.
- It wears down over time, and it doesn’t grow back on its own.
Built in layers
A factory paint job is built in four to six layers. An electrocoat, or e-coat, goes onto the bare metal, then a primer, then the colour coat, and finally the clearcoat on top.
Simplified cross-section. Not to scale.
Most cars built since the 1980s use this system, known as basecoat and clearcoat.
What the colour coat can’t do
On its own, the colour coat looks flat. It carries the colour, and on metallic paints the flakes, but not the depth. The clearcoat sprayed over it is what gives the finish its depth and clarity.
That’s why a panel polished through its clearcoat shows a dull patch: the colour coat underneath has been exposed.
What it protects against
Clearcoat contains UV absorbers that shield the layers underneath from sunlight. It also takes the wear from washing, dust and everyday contaminants, so the colour beneath doesn’t have to.
It’s the manufacturer’s own protection, and it’s on essentially every car on the road. Washing, waxing, polishing and coatings all exist to look after it.
Clearcoat behaves like brakes or tyres: it wears down, and it doesn’t grow back on its own.
Thinner than you’d think
On most modern cars, factory clearcoat is only around 50 microns (µm) thick. A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre, so that’s thinner than a sticky note. And factory paint today is thinner than it was 30 years ago.
You usually can’t see how much is left. A finish can look glossy and still be running low.
Looking after it
Everything that keeps clearcoat on the car helps: gentle washing, removing bird droppings and sap quickly, and only polishing when the paint has margin to spare.
When it has worn too thin, it can now be rebuilt instead of cut down further. That’s what FUSION does: it adds clearcoat back into the existing finish.
Common questions
Is clearcoat the same as a ceramic coating?
No. Clearcoat is part of the paint, applied by the manufacturer. A coating goes on top of it later, and protects the clearcoat.
Can I see how much clearcoat my car has left?
Not by eye. A Paint Health Check takes paint-depth readings across the car and reads them with its history and condition.
Does clearcoat grow back?
No. Once it’s worn or polished away, it doesn’t return on its own. It can now be rebuilt.
